The 8-track tape was developed by an engineer named William Powell Lear Jr., who was also the founder of Learjet Corporation. Lear introduced the Stereo 8 cartridge in 1964. The format used a continuous loop of 1/4-inch magnetic tape housed in a plastic cartridge.
