Retry Correct Incorrect According to NASA, President Kennedy announced a bid for the United States to catch up to and overtake the Soviet Union in the Space Race of the ’50s and ’60s. Since the Soviets had already put the satellite Sputnik and a manned flight in orbit by then, Kennedy’s stated goal in 1961 was to put an American on the moon. Although he wouldn’t live to see it, that goal would be realized on July 20, 1969.
