After John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson took over the presidency along with all of the issues facing the country at the time. Here, Lyndon B. Johnson can be seen signing the 1965 Voting Rights Act in the Presidents Room at the U.S Capitol. The Voting Rights Act was a major piece of federal legislation at the time because it prohibits racial discrimination in voting in the United States. The Act secured the voting rights of racial minorities, particularly in the South. Today, it is still considered to be the most effective piece of civil rights legislation ever enacted in the United States.
